Spreading the good vibes! A GIVEAWAY!

Over the past couple weeks I have had a lot of things go my way.  Some small things, like perfect connections on transit, a table at a busy restaurant right when you walk in... some things big!  Hoi Bo, the maker of my favourite bags had an Instagram photo contest to win this navy Pleated Satchel and I won!  I never win anything!  I was so excited as I have a few pieces from Hoi Bo and use them on the regular and had been coveting this beauty!  I am one lucky gal!  Felt so lucky I went and bought a lotto ticket and though I haven't checked it, I am pretty sure I must have won!  Haha!

Check out the Hoi Bo website to see all of their amazing bags and clothing!  So many gorgeous things!
Anyhow, I thought I would spread some happiness and good karma and offer up a giveaway of our own on our Facebook and/or Instagram pages!  Look for the photo above and follow the instructions for a chance to win this Cascade Necklace!  It's a necklace that combines a variety of chains with vintage acrylic jewels.  It looks great dressed up for a formal evening or my personal favourite thing to do, draped over a simple t-shirt.  Good luck with the contest!  We'll choose a winner on Thursday, May 14th, 2015 at 3pm.

A visit at Bookhou

Before Christmas, my Sister and I dropped in at Bookhou to pick up some gifts.  So inspiring to see Arounna (above) and John and their cute family in action in the store.  Loved seeing the productive and calm studio and all the little bits of work, art and collectibles pinned up on the walls.  My eyes were darting everywhere to soak it all in.

Here are some of my favourite things in their store:

Sister and I left with matching Christmas gifts for each other and something for Aunt L. too.  Plus we departed with a warm feeling on a cold blustery day after visiting and supporting good people!  Shopping local is the best.

Food obsessions

The latest foods that I have been obsessed with making have been candied almonds and kale in all forms - sautéed with garlic, mingled with lemony pasta and of course in salads.  Thought I'd share a couple simple recipes that involve very little difficultly and a lot of winging it.  The measurements listed are definitely approximate!
Candied Almonds
2 cups almonds
1/4 cup white sugar
Dash or two of cinnamon
1 Tbsp cold water
Pinch of fleur de sel
Give the almonds a quick rinse in cold water to moisten the nuts.  In a pan or pot, stir cinnamon into sugar.  Add 1 Tbsp water.  Heat on medium low heat in a small saucepan until mostly liquified.  I like to keep some of the graininess of the sugar.  Add nuts and stir until coated.  Remove from stove top and pour onto baking sheet - see photo above.  Sprinkle with fleur de sel and bake at 350F for about 20 minutes.  Check to make sure nuts are not burning and stir occasionally.  When moisture is gone, you are done!  Allow to cool and nibble away!

Kale Salad with Toasted Almonds, Dried Cranberries and Parmigiano Reggiano
Bunch of kale (maybe 8-10 leaves to serve 4)
Extra virgin olive oil
Juice of about half a lemon
Pinch of sea salt
1 tsp honey
Freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup almonds, toasted and crushed
Parmigiano Reggiano, shaved
Dried cranberries (missing from photo)

Remove stalks from kale and cut leaves into bite size pieces.  In a large bowl, drizzle kale with olive oil and half of the lemon juice.  Add some salt.  Stir/toss/massage until greens are coated.  Let kale sit for a few minutes, tossing occasionally.  In the meantime, whisk together the remaining lemon juice with the honey, pepper and more olive oil.  Adjust proportions to taste.  Add this dressing to kale and toss.  Sprinkle some toasted almonds, some dried cranberries and some shaved Parmigiano Reggiano.  And chomp chomp chomp!  Instant healthy boost!  Though maybe not so much when I pair it with fried chicken...

Spaces

How was your weekend?  Here it rained a fair bit.  Tonight was the perfect cool evening to peruse beautiful spaces and dream of a charming new home!

Love getting a wee peek into people's homes!  I love colour and small quirky details mixed in with neutrals and warm woods all set against classic architectural bones...  Bit schizophrenic in my preferred decor!

These are spaces that I have spotted on Pinterest over the past little while... I wish I could properly credit them all.  Please click through to find out more about the sources.

Lunch with the Royals

Check out these most awesome Royal dolls that J.S. made for her niece!  She replicated the Queen, Wills and Kate in knitted goodness.  She captured every detail down to eye colour and earrings!  Too good!
She brought them out to lunch along with this vegetable.  Hilarious!  He's a celery stalk, but could just as easily pass for Chinese broccoli!

I was so impressed with these yarn creations especially since I am unable to follow instructions of any sort.  Think I am an intuitive learner...  and my knitting skills set consists of scarves and other rectangular items.

Love my creative friends!

Hello...

Hello!  Things have been crazy busy around these parts. I have a few more unanswered e-mails than I'd like, but plan on getting on top of that over the easter weekend.  I am playing major catch up on custom orders and keeping up with the retailers.  Too many nights up working late for this gal!  I am running on a seriously low amount of sleep.  Partly it is my fault for wanting to catch up with friends that I have not had the chance to see over this busy spell and partly 'cause in my family, we are gearing up to my sister's wedding!  I am still lacking an outfit so I've been trying to poke around some shops too.  So, I'm sorry for the light blogging, but I wanted to post a quickie and say hello!

Indulging

During the holidays I spoiled myself, with the help of a gift card, and picked up some new makeup at NARS. Pictured are shadows Abyssinia, duo Brumes and Night Clubbing. All are awesome but the best thing I took home, and my reason for writing this post, is the "smudge proof eyeshadow base" Pro-Prime. Angela at the NARS counter at Holt's was super helpful and enthusiastic (plus patient) and told Sister and I that it would prevent shadow from budging. She was not exaggerating. You can roll around, have a nap, stroll about in the rain, squish your contacts around.... and it goes nowhere. I was impressed. Just thought I'd share!

Eye wear

I recently broke my glasses.  It's a big bummer even though they were super cheap online numbers and I didn't even love them, but they were my first pair of glasses in over 20 years of wearing contacts and more importantly my first pair ever that didn't make my dizzy.  Oh well!  The fun part now, is looking for a new pair!  My Sis and W gave me a gift certificate to my fave glasses spot down the street.  I tend to buy sunnies there.  On my latest visit, I spotted these from Oliver Goldsmith.  Perfect! Beautiful frames in a neutral colour that fit my apparently over-sized head!  Now I just need to decide if I am willing to splurge.  I'll be a responsible consumer and see what else is out there, I suppose!  If I don't order these glasses, I'll get these lovely Paul Smith shades with the gift cert!  Either in the Onyx with Mahogany or the Nude.  Don't know which I like better!  Thanks to Sister and the future Brother-in law!

Pass the syrup...

Ok.  Is this not the most awesome bedding you have ever seen?  I cannot even get over how real those blueberries look!?  I've been staring at this for 10 mins.  Imagine crawling into a giant waffle to sleep every night?  This was part of the BFA thesis show of Brook of B Fiber and Craft Emporium.  You should see the Baked Potato bean bag chair.  It is too good.  If I had a bigger more minimal home, I'd get one of each!
